כתיבה היא פעולה אנושית מורכבת המשלבת מרכיבים קוגניטיביים, תנועתיים ותפיסתיים-מוטוריים.
כתיבה הינה עיסוק מרכזי בילדות, עיסוק שהוא חיוני ליכולתם של ילדי בית הספר לתפקד, לעבוד ולהשתתף בסביבת הכיתה.
ילדי בית הספר היסודי מבלים עד 50% ממשך יום הלימודים בביצוע מטלות כתיבה שחלקן מתבצעות תוך מגבלת זמן. בנוסף לכך, במהלך שלוש השנים הראשונות בביה"ס מצופה מילדים לרכוש רמת מומחיות בכתיבה המאפשרת להם לעשות שימוש מיומן בכתיבה כ"כלי" בכדי למלא את דרישות ה"עבודה" בביה"ס. לילדים המתקשים לפתח את יכולות הכתיבה שלהם יש קושי לבטא את יכולתם במסגרת הלימודית.
קושי בכתיבה היא הסיבה הנפוצה ביותר להפניית ילדים בגילאי ביה"ס למטפל בעיסוק כך שקושי זה מהווה מוקד לעניין רב עבור תחום הריפוי בעיסוק. קושי בכתיבה היא הסיבה הנפוצה ביותר להפניית ילדים בגילאי ביה"ס למרפאים בעיסוק. עד כה, כללו הגישות המרכיות להערכת הכתיבה הערכות גלובליות – הוליסטיות של הקריאות והערכות אנליטיות האומדות את רמת הקריאות ביחס לקריטריון שנקבע מראש. מערכת ממוחשבת שפותחה ע"י פרופ' רוזנבלום ושותפים (Computerized Penmanship Evaluation Toll - ComPET) מיועדת לחקור את התהליך הכתיבה בדרך מדויקת המספקת ממדים אובייקטיביים של אופן הביצוע. מחקרים בשילוב COmPET נערכו בקרב ילדים עם דיסגרפיה, קשיי למידה וילדים עם DCD. יתרה מכך כתוצאה מהמורכבות של הכתיבה נמצא כי ComPET רגיש לשינויים בתפקוד הקוגניטיבי הקשורים לגיל כמו גם למחלות כמו אלצהיימר, פרקינסון, טרשת נפוצה ועוד.
